Historic Savannah

Welcome to cobblestone streets, oak laned streets dripping with moss, and gingerbread homes with wide welcoming porches, perfect for sipping sweet tea on a hot Southern afternoon. You are in the Historic District of Savannah, Georgia. This is one of the largest historical districts in the nation, and within its twenty blocks are churches, museums, mansions and even the remnants of military forts. Savannah played a huge role in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War. Old Fort Jackson celebrated its 200th birthday in 2008. It is now brilliantly preserved for touring, as is Battlefield Park where over 8,000 troops during the Revolutionary War fought .

The Savannah History Museum is rich with exhibits and artifacts, some dating back to 1733 when the city was founded. See memorabilia from the movie Forrest Gump and more. Next, take a guided tour of the stately homes where famous Savannah families once resided like the poet Conrad Aiken and Girls Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Lowe. Or, learn the role the city, its buildings and forts played in the Civil War. Our nation's history comes alive in Savannah.

Tour the Andrew Low House on Lafayette Square, and then marvel at the swans in Fayette Fountain. Enjoy a riverboat cruise down the Savannah River, or into the Atlantic off Tybee Island Lighthouse to spot dolphins playing. Stroll down River Street to the Roundhouse Railroad Museum sponsored by the Coastal Heritage Society, then ride the electric streetcars. Here you will find ample boutiques, antique stores, local artists' galleries and pubs tucked into historic buildings. It's a great way to spend the afternoon, and on into the evening in one of the fine restaurants and clubs near the bustling port.

If you like ghost stories, have fun on the Old Town Trolley tour. Savannah has been called one of America's most haunted cities. Learn about the pirates and other colorful characters which may still walk the shores and alleys. Take a cemetery tour, or a tour in a vintage hearse for a ghoulish good time. Perhaps, a well acted play in the historic Savannah Theatre is more your style. Whatever your pleasure, historic Savannah awaits.
