Des Moines IA Hotel Deals
Des Moines, Iowa began as a fort situated on two rivers. Iowa is part of the breadbasket of the United States. It was grain that grew Des Moines into the commerce center it is today, followed by the publication and insurance industries. Today it is called the Insurance Capital. The capital of Iowa, it has over half a million people, a rich history and an upbeat vibe. Within a twenty block radius in downtown, most buildings are accessible by above ground, climate controlled covered walk ways. Year round, visitors and locals alike can shop, do business or sightsee in comfort. There are also many quality hotels downtown with great discounted rates on rooms.
Des Moines is famous for it's unusual architecture, like the Capitol Building which takes the typical dome design a bit further than most, and Terrace Hill which is home to the governor. Several historic houses worth visiting include a Tudor styled castle-like mansion called Salisbury House, and a gothic Italian mansion called Jordan House. Hoyt Sherman Place was once a Victorian era manor house, but in the 1920's the theater was added. Today it is a multifunctional building where all international names perform. Fort Des Moines Museum is unique in its tribute to both women and African Americans' contribution to our military history. All of these historic sites are nearby top-notch low-cost hotels with affordable room prices.
Visit the 150 foot glass domed Botanical Gardens, considered to be in the top ten. Then stroll over to the Blank Park Zoo to see animals in native habitats such as Australia and Africa. If you want to observe local nature, head to Big Creek State Park on an 866 acre man-made lake not far from clean, low-priced motels. Bike, swim, fish or hike the 26 miles of meandering nature trails.
For fun and recreation, Des Moines has it covered. Sleepy Hollow Sports Park offers swimming pools, volley ball and sand volleyball courts, baseball diamonds, golf and miniature golf. For culture, see the Des Moines Art Gallery, just a few minutes from comfortable, inexpensive hotels. The nightlife is vibrant and varied along Court Ave, and Historic Junction Valley nestles unique bistros, galleries and shops.
