Charleston Beaches

Come play in Charleston! There are plenty of sunny days and warm weather fun along the beaches where footsteps have trod for centuries. Here Native Americans fished, pirates landed and Civil War sailors boarded ships and the brand new contraption called a submarine. Today, thousands of locals and tourists visit the five beaches close to Charleston SC hotels with discounted room rates. Why not join them?

Folly Beach has the nickname of "The Edge of America". Just a short trek from downtown Charleston, this beach has long been a favorite of the natives as well as tourists. However, since Hurricane Irene, it has suffered severe erosion along the beach and is expected to be closed for many years. Still, you can rent a paddle board or kayak to tour the low country. Be sure to visit the Morris Island Lighthouse and take a trip to James Island to hunt for sea shells, or just bask with a good book. If you prefer more of an adrenaline rush, there is parasailing and jet skis to rent. You can also rent scooters to zip around the area so you can leave your car at your hotel.

Isle of Palms also has a county park and a designated swimming area. It, too, is just minutes from downtown Charleston. Sullivan's Island has a laid back feel about it. There is rich history here stemming back to the Revolutionary War. You can tour the restored Fort Moultrie constructed from palmetto trunks which was strategic in our nation's protection up through WWII. The island is primarily residential, but along the beach are cheap Charleston SC hotels, great restaurants and bars. Tour the lighthouse which has an elevator!

The last two beaches are found on Seabrook Island and Kaiwah Island. Seabrook is about a half hour south of downtown and is mostly for private access only through cheap Charleston SC hotels and resorts or private residences. Beachwalker County Park is a ten-mile stretch of soft, sandy beaches on the western end of the island surrounded by massive oaks and magnolias. It is open to the public. The Travel Channel named Kaiwah Island as one of the top ten US beaches. It's no wonder when you wander through Freshfields Village filled with quaint shops and eateries.
