Historic Charleston - The South Come to Life

Step back in time and experience a vital part of our nation's history in Charleston. This charming Southern city has a rich history that reached back before the United States was a nation. Tour the 18th century plantations, like the one called Middletown Place. Wander through some of the nation's oldest and intricately landscaped gardens as period dressed docents explain the duties once performed by slave forces. Next, be sure to tour the Magnolia Plantation, which was established in 1676, with its Biblical Garden and antebellum cabin. They allow well behaved leased pets to tour the grounds alongside you. Boone Hall Plantation is still a working plantation and has one of the world's longest oak lined pathways leading up to the colonial columned mansion.

There are other historical tours you can take, such as a pirate tour. The coastline of Charleston was famous for swashbuckling activities. Learn all about Blackbeard and other notorious visitors. Also visit historic maritime sites such as Patriots Point and the Naval Museum. Then, tour the first U.S. submarine, the H.L. Hunley which, thanks to modern technology, was raised form its ocean grave in 2000. Visit Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumter, both strategic strongholds throughout our nation's history. You can take a short cruise, which leaves from Patriots Point.

Of course, the city of Charleston itself is abundantly wealthy in history. Many of the sites are just steps away from inexpensive Charleston hotels. Wander through the Old City Market which has been happening since 1804. Watch Gullah ladies weave the sweetgrass baskets and create other low country crafts. Tour the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon where Revolutionary Patriots were imprisoned, and then head to Thomas Heyward Jr.'s Revolutionary War House, a three story restored mansion built in 1772. These are just a few of the wonderful homes and mansions in the historic Charleston district along what is called Museum Mile. Tour the Charleston Museum to learn the furniture, fashions and lifestyles of the Lowcountry residents throughout the centuries. Charleston is also rich in religious historic sites, many established in the 18th and early 19th centuries, including St Michael's, the oldest standing church in the city. Take a tour and hear the amazing history of its eight bells.
