Columbia Overview

Columbia is the proud capital and most populated city of South Carolina. Located near the Appalachian Mountains, Columbia was founded in 1786. As one of the first planned cities in America, Columbia grew to become a vibrant commercial center of the South until destroyed by fire at the hands of General Sherman in 1865.

Today Columbia, S.C is considered a great city to visit for kayaking and canoeing. It is also said to be one of the best cities to live in. Home to the University of South Carolina and Fort Jackson, the largest training base in the U.S Army, Columbia is in the midst of a significant population surge and urban revitalization movement. Downtown Columbia houses art galleries, shopping centers and historic residential districts filled with beautiful antebellum homes Famous landmarks and architectural sites include the Finlay Park Fountain, USC's "Horseshoe," Olympia Mill and the Five Point Fountain.
