Greenwood began as a summer home for one couple in the 1800's. Today, people still come here for summer vacation. This quiet Southern city in the midst of lush land near Greenwood Lake offers more than meets the eye. The mild weather allows visitors to enjoy what Greenwood has to offer year round. Uptown Greenwood leads you to unique shops and cozy cafes. There are several historic sites as well. The Ninety Six was an outpost strategic in the Revolutionary War and today you can still tour the fort remnants and battlefield. Come in autumn when the leaves are turning. The Museum lets visitors view Main Street during the early 1900's along with other exhibits which has won it the award of S.C. Tourist Attraction of the Year several times. Greenwood's Theater built in 1934 still holds quality productions all year long. Just a short trek from hotels offering discounted rates, the century year old Federal Building promotes the fine arts with exhibits and classes. It has conference and meeting space as well.
Sports lovers head for Greenwood Lake for fishing, boating and water skiing. There are five coves and over 900 acres to hike, camp or just enjoy along the Lake's shores. You'll find bait and tackle shops, public boat launches and restaurants around the 212 miles of shoreline. Not far from affordable, upscale motels, are three areas of town you'll want to visit. West Cambridge Park was formerly a train switching yard. Today it is verdant acreage with playgrounds, sports field and nature trails. Walk along the Heritage Trail built over an abandoned railroad track to the Railroad Museum. On the north side of Greenwood the Rock Creek Trail connects neighborhoods along a two mile tree lined pathway. But the main attraction in Greenwood is the greens - golf courses galore. Find hotels near Cedar Springs Golf Club. Each year when the Masters Tournament is played in nearby Augusta, many of the tourists, press and players stay in Greenwood. Greenwood is also just a little over an hour from Columbia hotel discounts to the southeast and Greenville hotel discounts to the north.
