Chattanooga Overview

Made famous by the 1941 Glenn Miller big band classic, "Chattanooga Choo Choo", Chattanooga offers rich history, warm climate and a stunning Appalachian Mountain backdrop for locals and visitors. The name "Chattanooga" comes from an Indian word for "rock." Indians would inhabit the region until the forced relocation to Oklahoma ("Trail of Tears") in 1838. During the Civil War, Chattanooga was the stage for three famous battles, "The Battle of Chattanooga 1, 2, and 3." At the end of the war, the city became a major manufacturing center, even being known as "The Dynamo of Dixie".

Most recently, Chattanooga has won several national awards for livability and city planning. A series of city wide renovations have rejuvenated the city's waterfront and historic districts, including the Walnut Street Bridge, the longest pedestrian truss bridge in the world. Chattanooga servers as the headquarters for many national corporations including the Tennessee Valley Authority, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Tennessee, The Chattanooga Bakery (home of the Moon pie), and Miller Industries, the largest tow truck manufacturer in the world (the tow truck was invented in Chattanooga).

There are many and varied attractions and activities in Chattanooga. One of the most popular attractions is the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Once a railroad terminal hub, it is now a premier hotel and entertainment complex, with private rail car rooms, the world’s largest model train exhibit and one of the only remaining 1880s Steam Engines. Another famous attraction is Ruby Falls, a stunning waterfall inside of the famous Look Out Mountain. Visitors enjoy taking a ride up Look Out Mountain on The Incline Railway, the steepest railroad incline in the world. Another famous attraction is the Tennessee Aquarium. Attracting visitors throughout the south east, the Aquarium has both fresh water and ocean exhibits. Chattanooga is also home to a 3D IMAX Theatre, Chattanooga Zoo at Warner Park, The Children's Discovery Museum and a host of parks, green spaces and recreation centers.
