Austin Overview
The first groups of people to occupy the area later known as Austin were Native American tribes, including the Tonkawa, Comanches and Apaches. The city was renamed Austin after Stephen Austin, "The Father of Texas," when Texas was annexed into the United States, with Austin as the new capital. Starting in the 50's, Austin began to bloom with research institutes, laboratories, shopping centers and libraries. The 70's brought the Austin music scene to national attention, with artists such as Willie Nelson and the television program Austin City Limits, the longest running concert program in the country. Today, Austin is known for music, culture and technology. Not only has Austin been the home for numerous high technology start ups and an industrial concern, Austin hosts more music venues per capital than any other city in the U.S.
Austin draws thousands of visitors yearly. "South by Southwest", hosted in Austin, is a very popular music, film and multimedia festival which draws visitors from around the country. The Urban Music Festival, Austin Reggae Festival and Carnival are among the many well attended Austin events. Though known for its night life, Austin has many historical, cultural and artistic attractions. Austin is known for its theatre venues such as the Zachary Scott Theatre Center, Salvage Vanguard Theater, Scottish Rite Children's Theater and the Esther's Follies magic and comedy show which has been running for over 30 years. The city is also home to Ballet Austin, the fourth largest ballet academy in the country and the University of Texas of Austin, one of the most prominent public institutions in the country.
