Appalachian State University is a public, coeducation school. Blanford B. and Daniel D. Dougherty began the school as a teacher's college in 1899. It is now part of the University of North Carolina system (as of 1971). There are 15,000 undergraduate students in over 100 majors and 2,000 graduate students in nearly 50 majors. It's the 6th largest of the 16 University of North Carolina systems. In 1986, US News and World Report ranked it in the top 10 of Southern Master's Universities.

The school is located in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, a rural environment, located in northwestern part of North Carolina on 1,300 acres. It has 21 residence halls, 4 dining facilities and 11 recreational facilities.

Boone, North Carolina is the county seat for Watauga County. Its population is about 17,000. It's named after American pioneer, Daniel Boone. US News listed it in the top 10 of best places to retire in 2012.

Visits to Appalachian State University are encouraged. There's a fall open house and a spring open house. There are many arts, performing arts, craft, writing and visual arts series and schools. Beginning in 1984, ASU started a summer festival which attracts 26,000 each year.
