Assumption College was founded in 1904 as a Roman-Catholic private liberal arts college. The founding order was the Augustinians of the Assumption. Ninety percent of the students live on campus. There are numerous clubs and organizations for students. The team mascot is the Greyhound. Sports team compete in the NCAA Division II.

In 1969, Assumption College became coeducational allowing women students for the first time. In 1969, women and laymen were also allowed to be part of the faculty. The Center for Continuing and Professional Education is over 25 years old. It encourages continuing education by offering credit and non-credit courses. There is also a French Institute for learning and research of French culture, French history and the French language. There's also a senior education program which encourages senior citizens to take non-credit courses.

First year students live on campus in Desautels hall and Alumni hall. Upperclassman live in various on-campus residences. Le Provocateur is the student run newspaper. The yearbook is called The Heights. Phoenix is a literary magazine and Thoreau's Rooster is a creative nonfiction journal. Notable alumni include Hon. Jay Garcia-Gregory (1966) – a federal district judge and Brian Kelly (1983) – the football coach at Notre Dame.
