Bacone College is a private, independent four-year liberal arts institution located in Muskogee, Oklahoma. According to its mission statement, Bacone College is “related to the American Baptist Churches, USA.” It emphasizes a strong commitment to the American Indian community. Bacone College is the oldest continuing center of higher education in the State of Oklahoma.

Bacone College traces its roots back to 1880 and the founding of the Cherokee Baptist Mission at Tahlequah, Indian Territory. With an original student body of three, the school quickly expanded to an enrollment of fifty-six by the end of its first year. With a land grant of 160 acres from the Creek Tribal Council, the school moved in 1885 to its present site in Muskogee. In 1910, the school was renamed Bacone Indian University after its founder, Almon C. Bacone. The name was later changed to Bacone College.

Today, Bacone College retains its Christian heritage, but is not reserved strictly for American Indians. Bacone College currently enrolls nearly 1200 students and offers 29 associate and bachelor’s degrees through its Schools of Education and Health Services, and five divisions: Division of Arts and Sciences; Division of American Indian Studies; Division of Business; Division of Adult Education; and Division of General Studies. Bacone College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

As part of its tradition, Christian principles are emphasized at Bacone College. However, there is no attempt at religious conformity. Students are free to develop their own religious insights. All students are required to take at least one course in religion.

Bacone is a residential college and strives to accommodate as many students as possible within its system of six residential facilities. Students are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of on-campus clubs and organizations, as well as intramural sports.

Bacone College’s varsity sports teams, nicknamed the Warriors, compete primarily within the NAIA as members of the Red River Athletic Conference, while its football team is part of the Central States Football League.
