Bates College is a private, liberal arts institution located in Lewiston, Maine. Founded by abolitionists in 1855, and originally named the Maine State Seminary, the school was New England’s first coeducational college. From its establishment, the college admitted students without regard to race, religion, national origin or sex. A number of Bates’ earliest students were former slaves. In 1863, Reverend Oren Burbank Cheney, the school’s founder, received a collegiate charter and obtained finances to expand the college. The school was renamed Bates College in 1864.

Today, Bates College is consistently ranked as one of the best liberal arts institutions in the nation. The school’s current enrollment is over 1750. Students can earn Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees. All students are required to complete a general education program and choose a specialized course of study. Over thirty majors are offered. Students also have the option to design their own interdisciplinary major. Most majors require the completion of a senior thesis. Bates encourages its students to pursue academic research, either on their own or in partnership with faculty members. Additionally, approximately 65% of Bates’ students study abroad for a semester or longer.

Bates is situated on a 109-acre traditional New England-style campus. Over 90% of its students reside in college-operated housing, most in one of the school’s thirteen dormitories or twenty-five on-campus Victorian houses. There are over sixty sponsored organizations at Bates, including sports clubs and departmental ensembles. The Representative Assembly, Bates’ student government, serves as both a forum for students and a liaison between the student body and administration. Strongly grounded in the principals of diversity, inclusion and the progressive tradition, Bates does not allow exclusive organizations such as fraternities or sororities on its campus.

Bates’ thirty-one varsity sports teams, nicknamed the Bobcats, compete on the NCAA Division III level as members of the New England Small College Athletic Conference and the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin Consortium.
