Benjamin Franklin, one of the country's founders didn't just gain success in life. The money from his estate was used to build the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia and fund the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology, located in Franklin's original hometown of Boston, Massachusetts. An engineering and technology school – it is one of the oldest New England Schools for those fields. Andrew Carnegie, the industrialist, also helped fund the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology. Though Franklin died in 1789, his will required that the estate funds be used for workman loans for 100 years before Boston could use the money. In his honor, Boston started the school in 1908.

The Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology offers Bachelor's Degrees, Associates degrees and certificates. Tuition and fees are about $13,400 for the school's 450 day students. About three-fourths of the students get financial aid. The school is a two year school based in the South End of Boston. According to their website, 90 percent of the graduates obtain jobs in their field or complete their four year education.

Learning is hands-on as students are encouraged to apply their learning theories to practical applications. The Academic Success center has 27 special labs. There's also an auditorium which seats 800. The school is unique for Massachusetts in several of its academic offerings. It's the only Massachusetts school to offer an Opticianry and Electrical Technology Associate's degree. It also offers Bachelor degrees in Automotive Technology and in Health Information Technology. There's also a certificate for Alternative Fuel Vehicles. There are Bachelor degrees in Health Information Technology and the successful automotive management program. Students can get an Associate of Science degree in ten different disciplines. The student body at Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology is diverse socioeconomically and ethnically. Some high school students are allowed to take courses at the school. Continuing education courses are also offered.
