Bethune-Cookman University, formerly Bethune-Cookman College, is a private, historically black institution located in Daytona Beach, Florida. Often referred to as B-CU, Bethune-Cookman is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, the third largest Christian denomination in the United States. The university’s history dates back to 1904 and the founding of the Daytona Educational Industrial Training School for Negro Girls by Mary McLeod Bethune. In 1923, the school merged with the Cookman Institute of Jacksonville and became a coeducational high school. In 1931, the school evolved into a junior college and became known as Bethune-Cookman College. A four-year liberal arts and teacher education program was approved in 1941 by the Florida Department of Education. Following the establishment of the college’s first graduate program in 2007, the name was again changed, this time to Bethune-Cookman University.

Today, B-CU enrolls approximately 3500 undergraduate and 60 graduate students. The university offers thirty-five undergraduate degrees through its system of eight academic schools. The most popular areas of study include Corrections and Criminal Justice, Business Administration and Management, Registered Nursing, and Psychology. B-CU also awards two Master of Science degrees in Transformative Leadership and Integrated Environmental Science. Bethune-Cookman University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

B-CU’s campus is situated on 82 acres in Daytona Beach, approximately two miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Campus features include 53 academic and administrative buildings, technology centers, student center, infirmary, athletic facilities and a performance hall. Approximately half of B-CU’s students reside on-campus in a system of one co-ed, seven men’s, and eleven women’s dormitories. Students can participate in a wide variety of campus-sponsored activities, including student government, intramural sports and numerous clubs and organizations. There is also an active Greek life, with several fraternities and sororities providing a wide range of academic, social and community service activities.

Bethune-Cookman currently fields varsity teams in ten different sports. The B-CU Wildcats compete at the NCAA Division I level as members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
