Birmingham-Southern College is a private, four-year liberal arts institution located in Birmingham, Alabama. The school is affiliated with the United Methodist Church, a mainline Protestant and Evangelical Christian denomination. The college’s history dates back to the late 1800’s and the founding of two schools: Southern University in Greensboro, Alabama; and Birmingham College in Birmingham. Each school was operated by one of the two Methodist Conferences established in the state at the time. In 1918, the conferences agreed to consolidate the two schools into one. The new institution, named Birmingham-Southern College was opened on September 11, 1918.

Today, Birmingham-Southern has a total enrollment of approximately 1300 undergraduates. The school currently offers over fifty courses of study, as well as interdisciplinary and specially individualized majors and dual degree programs. Six different degrees can be earned: Bachelor of Arts; Bachelor of Fine Arts; Bachelor of Music; Bachelor of Musical Arts; Bachelor of Music Education; and Bachelor of Science. Birmingham-Southern employs a unique 4-1-4 academic calendar in which students enroll in four classes in both the fall and spring semesters, and participate in a “January Exploration Term” in between. During the January Exploration Term, students focus on a single topic or interest in an intensive experiential learning environment.

Birmingham-Southern’s campus is situated on 192 wooded acres three miles west of downtown Birmingham. There are 45 buildings on site, including academic, administration, residential and athletic facilities. Approximately 85% of the student body chooses to live on campus in a system of eight residence halls and apartments. There are over eighty school-sponsored clubs and organizations in which students can participate, including music and theater groups, honorary societies, intramural sports and more. There is also an active Greek presence, with six fraternities and seven sororities.

The college fields 22 varsity sports teams, nicknamed the Panthers, who compete on the NCAA Division III level as members of the Southern Athletic Association.
