Boston College (often referred to as BC) is a private, Jesuit research university located six miles from downtown Boston, Massachusetts, in the village of Chestnut Hill. BC was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus. It opened its doors the following year with twenty-two students and three teachers. The school remained relatively small throughout the next several decades, serving its working class community with a curriculum of theology and philosophy, and classic and modern languages. Though originally chartered as a university, the school did not develop into a full university until the 1920’s and 1930’s. Today, Boston College boasts an enrollment of over 9000 undergraduate and 5000 graduate students and is consistently ranked as one of the finest institutes of higher learning in the nation.

Boston College’s academic program is organized into nine schools and colleges: College of Arts & Sciences; Graduate School of Arts & Sciences; Carroll School of Management; Lynch School of Education; Connell School of Nursing; Graduate School of Social Work; College of Law; School of Theology and Ministry; and the Woods College of Advancing Studies. BC is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a high research university. Additionally, approximately half of its students participate in international studies before graduation.

Boston College’s 175-acre main campus is situated on a hilltop overlooking the Chestnut Hill Reservoir. Because of its location and the presence of a number of gothic towers, the campus is often referred to as the “Heights.” The campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Though not required, most of the college’s students choose to live on-campus. There are no fraternities or sororities at BC. However, students can participate in over 200 sponsored clubs and organizations.

Boston College’s varsity sports teams, nicknamed the Eagles, compete on the NCAA Division I level as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. The school’s men’s hockey team is one of the most successful in the nation, boasting five national championships.
