Boston University (often referred to as BU) is a private research institution located in Boston, Massachusetts. With over 33,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 10,000 faculty and staff members, BU is one of the largest independent, non-profit universities in the country. The history of BU can be traced back to the establishment of the Newbury Biblical Institute in 1839. In 1869, the school was chartered with the name Boston University. The Charles River campus was established in the 1920’s. In 1951, the direction of the school was changed to that of a research institution and a decades-long expansion was begun. Today, BU continues to grow with a current strategic plan to consolidate and improve its existing campus programs and facilities.

Boston University currently offers over 250 courses of study throughout its system of 16 colleges and schools, including colleges of Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Fine Arts and Education, and schools of Management, Law, Medicine and Theology. BU is classified by the Carnegie Institute as an RU/VH research university, indicating a very high level of research activity. Additionally, Boston University maintains a strong global connection, fielding thousands of students and research projects around the world.

BU’s 133-acre campus is divided into two sections. The Main Campus contains most of the university’s schools and classrooms. The West Campus is home to athletic facilities and fields, as well as dormitories and a student village complex. Approximately 75% of BU students choose to live on-campus (freshmen are required), where they can avail themselves of the school’s state-of-the-art fitness center, a variety of pubs and restaurants, cultural performances and lectures, and participate in over 500 student clubs.

BU’s varsity athletic teams, known as the Terriers, compete on the NCAA Division I level as members of the Patriot League. The school’s hockey team competes as part of the Hockey East league.
