CUNY Brooklyn College (BC) is a public, four-year educational institution located in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. Brooklyn College is one of the eleven senior colleges that, along with seven community colleges and six other schools, make up the City University of New York system. Founded in 1930, Brooklyn College was New York City’s first coeducational liberal arts college. Originally offered to the community tuition-free, BC was established to provide a stepping stone for the children of working-class New Yorkers toward a better life. Brooklyn College became a member of the CUNY in 1961. Following a difficult period in the 1970’s, the school strengthened its curriculum and hired new faculty, leading to its rejuvenation.

Today, Brooklyn College enrolls more than 16,400 students. BC currently offers over 70 undergraduate and 60 graduate majors leading to 5 bachelor’s and 7 master’s degrees. Doctoral degrees in 8 science fields are also available. Additionally, BC offers advanced certificates programs, as well as pre-professional and professional courses of study. The college’s nationally recognized CORE Curriculum program, initiated in 1981, remains in place today. All undergraduates are required to complete 11 of 15 CORE Curriculum classes as part of their specific degree program.

Brooklyn College’s campus is situated on 26 urban acres in the heart of the borough of Brooklyn. Nevertheless, the campus’s trees and foliage, along with its Georgian-style buildings give the school the feel of a traditional New England college. Campus-sponsored housing is available at the Residence Hall at 1 Kenilworth Place, a privately-owned facility. Students may also make use of BC’s housing database to locate private off-campus living arrangements. Extracurricular activities at BC include intramural sports and more than 100 academic, cultural and social clubs and organizations.

Brooklyn College’s athletic teams, known as the Bulldogs, compete on the NCAA Division III level as members of the City University of New York Athletic Conference.
