Delta State University (also known as DSU) is a four-year comprehensive public educational institution located in Cleveland, Mississippi. It is one of eight schools that make up the Mississippi Public Universities System. According to its mission statement, DSU, “serves as an educational and cultural center for the Mississippi Delta, emphasizing service to the North Delta and its campus centers in Clarksdale and Greenville.” DSU history begins with the founding of Delta State Teachers College in 1924. Enrollment grew steadily over the next three decades and, in 1955, the school’s name was changed to Delta State College. After the development of several graduate degree programs, Delta State College became Delta State University in 1974.

Today, Delta State University enrolls over 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students. DSU’s comprehensive undergraduate program currently offers 13 bachelor’s degrees in over 40 major areas of study. Master’s degrees are offered in 18 majors as well as doctorate degrees in education and nursing. DSU is organized into four distinct colleges and schools: the College of Arts & Sciences; the College of Business; the College of Education & Human Services; and the Robert E. Smith School of Nursing. DSU programs of note include Commercial Aviation, the Delta Music Institute and the Geospatial Information Technology program.

Delta State’s main campus is situated on 274 acres in the northwest area of Cleveland. Campus features include the natatorium, the Bologna Performing Arts Center and the Delta Music Institute’s sound recording studios. Full-time students under 21 with fewer than 30 semester hours are required to live on-campus in DSU’s system of six residence halls. There are over 120 active student clubs and organizations at DSU, including religious, professional, performing and political groups of all kinds. There is also an active on-campus Greek life with several fraternity and sorority chapters.

DSU’s varsity sports teams, the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen, compete on the NCAA Division II level and are affiliated with the Gulf South Conference and New South Intercollegiate Swim Conference.
