Drake University is located in Des Moines, Iowa. It began in 1881 as a religious change. Francis Marion Drake (for whom the school is named) and many of the staff of Oskaloosa College left to form a new school. Originally, the school was affiliated with the Disciples of Christ – but there is no religious affiliation today. The first class at Drake had 77 students. It is a private school with over 3,000 undergraduate students that rests on 150 acres. There is also a graduate school and professional studies are offered in law, pharmacy and business. The law school is one of the oldest (in the top 25 for age) in the US.

According to the 2014 Best Colleges edition of US News and World Report, Drake is rated 3rd for Midwestern universities. Drake has also been rated by US News & World Report as of one of the top five Midwestern institutions. The Princeton Review rated Drake a Best College for the Midwest. The Chronicle of Higher Education rates Drake among the top 10 for national midsized universities. US News and World Report rates Drake University as one of the country's best values. According to the National Survey of Student Engagement, students rate Drake high for the degree of academic challenge, interaction between student and faculty and for a supportive enriching experience.

The College of Arts Sciences offers degrees in Astronomy, Computer Science, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology and other science disciplines. It also offers degrees in Economics, English, Law, Music Education, Sociology, Theater and many other traditional liberal arts studies. The College of Business & Public Administration offers undergraduate degrees in Accounting, Entrepreneurial Management, International Business and other disciplines. There are also many graduate degrees such as a Master of Financial Management. The School of Education offers degrees in elementary education, secondary education and special education. There's also a School of Journalism & Mass Communication. There are more females than males by 56.6 percent to 43.4 percent. 71 percent of the students live in college-related housing. Drake participates in the NCAA Division 1 for sports.
