Emory University is a private university with a research focus based in Atlanta, Georgia. It was founded as a College in 1836 and is named after John Emory, a Methodist bishop. The president of Coca-Cola, Asa Candler, helped the college move to Atlanta and become a university in 1915. The school has almost 3,000 faculty members including winners of the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowships and winners of the National Humanities Medal. According to the 2014 edition of US News and World Report, Emory is ranked 20th in the country among national universities. Tuition and fees for 2013-2014 are $44,000 plus.

Emory has been recognized by the Leadership in Energy and Environment Design. The school is aiming to have three-fourths of its on-campus food come from local or sustainable sources in the next two years. The school rests on a large 630 acre campus. Its 7,500 plus students use a semester schedule. Freshmen and sophomores must live on campus – many students live on campus all four years. Applications, ACT and SAT scores are all due by January 15. November 1 is the early admission date. Just over a quarter of the students who apply are accepted. There are seven students for each faculty member with about 60 percent of the classes having less than 20 students. Over 95 percent of students stay past their first year. Fifty-six percent of the students are females. Teams participate in NCAA Division III athletics.

Programs of study are aligned across nine divisions: The College of Arts and Sciences, Oxford College, a Business School, the Laney Graduate School, a Law School, a Medical School, a School of Nursing, a Public Health School and a School of Theology. At the Emory College of Arts and Sciences, there are about 60 majors. Forty percent of the students do some study abroad. For students who wish a smaller campus feel, there's Oxford College which is about 40 miles from the main campus.
