Columbus State University (CSU) is a public four-year educational institution located in Columbus, Georgia. CSU is one of 31 colleges and universities that make up the University System of Georgia. CSU’s history dates back to 1958 and the founding of Columbus College, a junior college first housed in the renovated Shannon Hosiery Mill. The school was moved to its current location in 1963. The college was approved to award four-year degrees in 1965. Master’s and specialist degrees were added soon after. The school’s name was changed to Columbus State University in 1996.

Today, Columbus State University enrolls over 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Through its system of seven colleges and schools, CSU students can choose from among 42 undergraduate and 46 graduate courses of study leading to two associate’s, eight bachelor’s, eight master’s and two doctoral degrees. CSU also offers a number of one-year and special certificate programs. Of particular note is the university’s Center for International Education which serves both students interested in studying abroad and a substantial international student body. CSU is currently partnered with 25 sister institutions located around the globe, including schools in China, Japan, India and the United Kingdom.

Columbus State University operates on two campuses, both in Columbus, approximately one hundred miles southwest of Atlanta. The 132-acre main campus is located in the Midtown area of Columbus. Points of interest include the Simon Schwob Memorial Library and the Frank G. Lumpkin, Jr. Center. The RiverPark campus is home to the university’s fine arts programs and features the state-of-the-art RiverCenter for the Performing Arts. CSU also maintains two satellite locations in West Point and Fort Benning.

Approximately one-fifth of CSU students choose to live on-campus. Extracurricular activities include intramural sports and over fifty sponsored clubs and organizations. CSU’s varsity sports teams, nicknamed the Cougars, compete on the NCAA Division II level as members of the Peach Belt Conference.
